Four summers ago at fifteen we gave him a shot without expectation. They called him Alex in the beginning. Now they all call him by his last name, Murray. Because under the sun in a windless sky when they were spent and the day had turned hard, they could see Murray set his mind against the afternoon toil. With the weight of their labor looming, they all wanted to work with Murray. They knew he would do his share of the work and likely some of theirs.
Now this rather quiet, intelligent 18 year old from Atlanta, is due to enter the Army as an enlisted man, reason being, it is the fastest route to Ranger school. Murray’s calm self assurance is genuine and void of hubris, and others can feel that. He inspires me. May God’s Speed follow his way.
