Neil Halper and his banjo on the beach.
On March 17th 2010, Neil Halper turned 18. Neil celebrated with 25 of his friends, on the beach, by a fire here at Rosemary. The night was dark. There was no moon and cloud cover hid the stars, making the fire light wonderful. The Gulf itself was luminescent. With every gentle wave, glowing phytoplankton feeding on phosphate illuminated the dark. Neil brought his banjo to the beach. Now I usually think of the Banjo as a fast moving amalgamation of sound and rhythm. But last night, Neil played the banjo softly in time with the ocean’s mood. Neil is a senior in high school from Nashville Tennessee.
